All About These Strawberry Sandwiches
Strawberry sandwich is a popular Japanese dessert often called strawberry sando or fruit sando. It is just like your typical sandwich but with a creamy twist. You get a layer of sweet strawberries cushioned in smooth whipped cream.
These are sandwiched between white bread, adding a slightly sweet and buttery taste. One thing to note about the bread is that the crusts are cut off, giving you a consistent airy and fluffy texture. It is the perfect summertime treat you can customize with other fruits like mangoes and kiwi.

Tips And Suggestions
If you are looking for ingredient alternatives, I share some tips and suggestions below to consider. You can change the fruit, choose the type of cream, or add more flavoring ingredients if you like. Don’t skip this part if it is your first time making this sweet treat.
- Strawberries: I always get fresh strawberries for a better-tasting sandwich. Choose strawberries with vibrant red skin and green leaves. Avoid the ones that are mushy or pale. Remove the green leaves and cut the strawberries into heart shapes for design. Aside from strawberries, add in more variety with mangoes, blueberries, oranges, and kiwis, to name a few.
- Bread: You can use regular white bread. If you want a milkier and fluffier bread, I recommend milk bread. Whole-wheat bread is also an excellent option. To make this vegan-friendly, use milk-free and egg-free bread. The edges of the bread are cut off before assembling it with the strawberries and cream.
- Heavy cream: I used heavy cream and whisked it until stiff peaks or firm peaks formed. When I say stiff peaks, it means the cream becomes stiff to the point it can stand straight up when lifted from the whisk. In this way, the cream won’t be runny in the sandwich and can be eaten easily. Avoid soft peaks that can’t hold their shape or medium peaks that still curl when lifted. Aside from heavy cream, cream cheese with mayonnaise also works. You can easily make this vegan-friendly by using plant-based cream.
- Optional flavoring ingredients: To add in-depth flavor, some ingredients to consider are a bit of maple syrup and orange zest. You can also adjust the taste with salt and garnish with chopped fresh basil.

You will need a knife to trim the bread crust and an electric whisk to whip up the heavy cream. To hold its shape, I recommend wrapping it tightly with plastic wrap.
Prepare these ingredients and adjust the amount according to how much you need:

- Trim the crusts of the bread.
- Clean and cut the leaves of the strawberries and shape them into heart shapes. You can shape it into a heart by cutting the top into a v-shape.
- Whip the heavy cream until it forms stiff peaks. It is a lot easier and faster to do this with an electric whisk.
- Spread the whipped cream evenly on the bread, place the strawberries, and top with more cream. I put the heavy cream into a piping bag and pipe it out. Then, I use a cream handle cutlery to smooth the heavy cream.
- Cover with another slice of bread.
- Wrap tightly with plastic wrap.
- Refrigerate for 1 hour.
- Cut the sandwich into small triangles before serving.
- Enjoy it with coffee or tea such as Refreshing Hand-Brewed Lychee Tea With Lemon.
