Try These Ingredient Alternatives And Suggestions
Here are some excellent alternatives and suggestions worth considering when making this tea. Check out these tips to learn how to prepare each ingredient and which alternatives to use.
- Lychees: I used 6 lychees that I peeled with the husk and seed removed. You can add more if you like. Use fresh or canned lychees. As an alternative, you can use lychee-infused tea bags or lychee syrup. If you want to swap lychee with another fruit, the closest alternatives are longan and rambutan. When cleaning and preparing the lychee, remove the shell to leave you with a white fruit. Cut this in half to remove the seed inside.
- Lemon slices: A few lemon slices add a bright and zesty taste to the tea. You can also use lime, lemon zest, lemon juice, or lemon puree as an alternative to lemon slices.
- Ice cubes: The ice cubes are crushed along with the rest of the ingredients. This is ideal if you prefer bits of ice to chew. However, you can simply add the ice cubes last as a whole without needing to crush them.
- Fructose: You can choose any type of sweetener, such as maple syrup, rock sugar, white sugar, brown sugar, muscovado, cane sugar, or coconut sugar. Adjust the sweetness according to your liking. This can also be omitted if you prefer no added sugars.
- Green tea: The tea base I brewed is green tea. Prepare this as you normally would by pouring boiled water over green tea bags in a cup for about 3 to 4 minutes. Let it cool down first or chill it in the fridge before adding to your lychee tea so that it does not melt the ice. You can also use jasmine tea as an alternative or other mellow or mild tea bases. I don’t really recommend black tea since this will only overpower the overall taste of the tea.
- Optional ingredients: Spice it up by adding more lemon slices for garnish. For a different flavor, you can also use fresh strawberries, strawberry puree, or strawberry syrup. Make it a fizzy drink by adding soda water or sparkling water.
