What Is Special About Pork Floss?

Is it your first time to hear about pork floss? If yes and you haven’t tried it, you are missing out! It is a must-use ingredient for almost any dish, from salads to congee and this delicious sandwich recipe.Pork Floss recipe

Pork floss is a variant of meat floss, a popular Chinese snack or condiment used in various savory dishes and sweet pastries. In the market, you may also find this as meat wool or rousong (肉松). It is a dried and shredded pork meat, typically thin strands like cotton.

You will enjoy its sweet and savory taste, as well as its light and cottony texture. Aside from pork floss, you may also find chicken floss, beef, and fish. If you prefer vegetarian or vegan floss options, use mushroom floss, sesame seaweed soya shreds, or vegetarian pork floss.

Where To Get Pork Floss For This Sandwich?

It won’t be a corn and pork floss sandwich without this main ingredient. So, make sure to have it on hand and don’t skip it. Pork floss can be bought in Asian grocery stores and online supermarkets like Amazon, typically in jars or plastic packaging.

If you can’t find pork floss in the store, I recommend making one yourself with my guide, How To Make Pork Floss. Don’t worry, it’s easy to do it! All you need to do is cook the meat with seasonings, tear it into shreds, fry it in the pan, and rub it into finer strands.

The Ingredients To Use For Corn And Pork Floss Sandwich

In this recipe, I use corn, cucumber slices, eggs, tomato slices, and chopped purple cabbage. I also add a drizzle of tomato ketchup and salad dressing for a moist and flavorful sandwich. Of course, let’s not forget your chosen meat floss.Pork Floss Sandwich

But hey, who am I to tell you what to put in a sandwich as sandwiches can be filled with any of your favorite ingredients! Add in a piece of bacon, spinach, lettuce, cheese, or onions. Fill this sandwich with almost anything you like to make your perfect snack.

  • Bread: Use any type of bread, such as white, whole wheat, rye, or multigrain, to name a few. You can toast it as well for a caramel-like taste and a crunchy bite. For a heavier meal, make a double or triple-layer sandwich.
  • Pork floss: Pork floss is the main ingredient. However, if you need a substitute, you can also opt for chicken floss, beef, and fish, mushroom floss, sesame seaweed soya shreds, or vegetarian pork floss.
  • Corn: I prefer yellow corn kernels. If you get canned corn kernels from the store, make sure to drain them thoroughly to avoid a soggy sandwich. An excellent alternative to corn kernels is whole corn. You will have to manually remove the corn kernels using a knife by slicing them down along the cob.
  • Cucumber: Choose fresh and ripe cucumber. It should be firm with a dark green color. Cut it into thin slices, either in straight or diagonal cuts. You can swap cucumber with zucchini, the best alternative for its mild flavor and similar texture.
  • Egg:It is up to you how you like your eggs. You can make hard-boiled eggs, scrambled, or sunny-side-up eggs for this sandwich. I only added one piece of egg, but you can add more if you prefer.
  • Tomatoes: One of the most common ingredients for sandwiches is a tomato. It is light and healthy and adds a juicy mouthfeel that soaks into the rest of the ingredients. Two tomato slices make the right combo for just the perfect dose of juiciness of this sandwich.
  • Purple cabbage: Add this nutrient-rich vegetable for a healthy meal. It is an excellent choice for a tasty crispy bite. Finely chop the purple cabbage and place it on top of the two tomato slices or on any part of the sandwich.
  • Sauces: Do not skip the sauces! It is important in adding flavor, moisture, and contrast in taste and texture. I drizzled some tomato ketchup and salad dressing on each layer of the sandwich. Other sauces you can use are BBQ sauce, banana ketchup, salsa, sour cream, pesto, mayonnaise, mustard, or hummus.
  • Additional ingredients: If you want to replace the main ingredients or add more for variety, here are some additional ingredients to consider:
    • Vegetables and Non-Meat Ingredients
      • Alfalfa sprouts
      • Avocado slices
      • Lettuce
