Got some extra wonton wrappers needing to be put to use? Or are you looking for more interesting ways to use wonton wrappers without the typical filling? If yes, you should make super crunchy fried wonton strips that are deep-fried until crispy. No filling needed – just dip it in your favorite sauce for finger-licking goodness!
What Are Fried Wonton Strips?
Wonton wrapper or wonton skin is the outer layer of wontons that are smooth and translucent. It is typically thinner and less elastic than dumpling wrappers. Most wonton wrapper recipes use flour, egg, and water to make it.
Some examples of recipes using wonton wrappers are air fryer wonton, wonton noodle soup, and crab & cream cheese wonton, to name a few. You can fry, deep-fry, or steam wonton wrappers, depending on the type of wonton you are going for. Aside from my 5 Easy Ways To Fold A Wonton, in this recipe, I fold the wonton wrappers in a special way to make a knotted twisted appearance.
I brushed each folded wonton wrapper with beaten eggs, sprinkled some sesame seeds, and deep-fried it in oil. It is crispy, juicy, and sinfully delicious. Dip it in your favorite sauce or sprinkle some barbecue seasoning for extra flavor.
Where To Get Wonton Wrappers
You can easily find this in Asian supermarkets or in the Asian aisle of grocery stores. This is typically packed in plastic packaging and comes in square cuts. If you can’t find this in the store, I recommend following my guide on How To Make Authentic Wonton Wrappers.
In making wonton wrappers using my guide, you will need an egg, water, flour, and cornstarch. The guide calls for mixing, kneading, resting, and shaping the dough into a wonton wrapper. This is the best alternative to ready-made wonton wrappers since it is made fresh with safe ingredients without preservatives.

- A pack of wonton wrappers
- 1 beaten egg
- White or black sesame seeds
- Oil for deep-frying
- Barbecue seasoning and your favorite dipping sauce

- Stack two pieces of wonton wrappers.
- Fold them in half sideways.
- Cut a straight line through the middle. This should give you an opening in the center.
- Hold the wrapper with two hands, with the folded part at the bottom.
- Take the left end of the wrapper and twist it inward through the opening.
- Gently pull it apart to tighten the knot and stay in place.
- Beat one egg in a bowl.
- Use an oil brush to brush the surface of each knotted wrapper with the beaten egg.
- Sprinkle some white or black sesame seeds on top.
- Prepare your pot with oil and heat it to around 320°F. The oil should be hot enough for deep-frying to avoid soggines. I recommend oils with a high smoke point such as avocado, peanut, canola, and corn oil.
- Once it is hot, carefully fry the wonton pieces until they turn golden brown and crispy.
- To enhance the flavor, sprinkle some barbecue seasoning or dip it in a dipping sauce.
